Unboxing Xmas Titles: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special [ENG]

This Christmas season, Marvel and Disney+ delivered a very special gift to all of The Guardians of the Galaxy’s fans. From November 25th, we’ve all been able to unbox the holiday return of the Guardians.

James Gunn co-wrote (with Nicole Perlman) and directed the original story of an intergalactic outlaw group. In 2014, we first met Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), the bumbling adventurer who became the target of Ronan (Lee Pace), a fanatic representative of the cosmic Kree race. To survive, Peter teamed up with four other outsiders. And just like that, the galaxy team was in action without any plan but with enough cleverness to usually get the job done.

Three years later, in 2017, the saviors of the galaxy returned to continue their journey, to uncover family secrets, and to defend the universe. Volume 3 will be released in May 2023.

We checked our Showlabs data for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in four markets – Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, during its first three weeks on the platform.

More than 1.3M Unique Viewers in Germany (UVs) watched the show in the

first 21 days after its premiere. They have spent about 0.79M hours (Total

Hours Watched, THW) with the Guardians.

Per our Showlabs data, 1.7M British fans (UVs) of the Galaxy outlaws were

watching the holiday episode for more than 1M hours, according to the Total

Hours Watch (THW) metric.

The total Unique Viewers (UV) score in the presented period is near 0.9M in

France. Consequently, the Total Hours Watched (THW) is 0.50M.

The highest numbers are reserved for American viewers, which is not surprising

because of the general wideness of the US market. Still, more than 6M THW

and 9.8M UVs are pretty impressive numbers for such a unique holiday

production.

Let’s compare another metric that is even more interesting. Share of Viewing

(SoV) is a percentage of all active profiles on the platform who watched at least

2 minutes of the given content. The metric shows the audience’s interest in the

series in a particular market. According to our Showlabs data, German viewers

were the most engaged in the Guardians’ holiday adventures. More than 14%

of all active Disney+ profiles in Germany watched the show in the measured

time. We observed the smallest percentage of SoV in France. In the United

States and the United Kingdom, the SoV was almost 14% and 13%,

respectively.

Since the best time for watching holiday content is yet to come, we may expect

these numbers to grow during Christmas.
