80th Golden Globes: surprises & disappointments

Summary of 28-day viewership of selected nominated and awarded titles.

Yesterday we met the winners of the 80th Golden Globe. The ceremony returned to television after last year's NBC declined to televise the ceremony. They did it in support of boycotts of the HFPA by various representatives of the creative industry. There were a few surprises and some controversies, but one of the biggest questions is what will happen with Golden Globes in the future since yesterday's ceremony concluded the deal Golden Globes had with NBC.

The other question is whether Golden Globes will regain its status as the run-up to the Oscars and the place where cinema met television. First reviews are mixed, and surely no one forgot about the shady atmosphere surrounding the HFPA and Golden Globes - as much as producers of the ceremony tried to dodge unpleasant and uncomfortable topics.

Still, we were eagerly waiting for the results, mainly because of the titles from HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Hulu which performances we were following on Showlabs.

Steven Spielberg's latest semi-autobiographical movie, "The Fabelmans," is one of this year's biggest winners. It won in BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA and the BEST DIRECTOR categories over Buz Luhrman's "Elvis."Austin Butler, who impersonated The King of Rock-n-Roll, received the BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA. The movie was available on HBO Max 45 days after its theatrical release and was viewed 6,52 million times in the United States during the first 28 days since its release.

It was available on HBO Max from 13 December 2022. In the first 7 days from its release, it was viewed 0,85 million times in the United States.

The movie, directed by Martin McDonagh, won over "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mistery" in the BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY category. Although the "Knives Out" sequel didn't win the Golden Globe, it still was a huge success, especially when it hit Netflix at the end of December 2022, gaining 24,6 million Unique Viewers (UV) in the first seven days from its release in the United States.

In the BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA category, the bar was set high by hugely popular titles appreciated both by audiences and critics. Triumphant "House of the Dragon" (HBO) competed with "Better Call Saul" (AMC), "The Crown" (Netflix), "Ozark" (Netflix), and "Severance" (Apple TV+). The winner - the "Game of Thrones" prequel, gathered 22,16 million Unique Viewers in the first 28 days in the United States, whereas "Ozark" season 4 had 18.50 M Unique Viewers, and "The Crown" season 5 - 8.6 M UVs in the same period.

A similar situation was in the BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY category, where the winner — "Abbott Elementary," competed with "The Bear" (FX on Hulu), "Hacks" (HBO Max), "Only Murders in the Building" (Hulu), and "Wednesday" (Netflix). "Abbott Elementary" had 12.43 million Unique Viewers in 28 days since its release on Hulu in the United States.

A definite surprise and perhaps the biggest loser of this year's Gala is, adored by the audience, "Wednesday." The series did not win either the BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY or the BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES - MUSICAL OR COMEDY categories. "Abbott Elementary" beat "Wednesday" in both, even though "Wednesday" was the series that gathered 83.2 million Unique Viewers in the first 28 days after its release in the United States — over six times more than "Abbott Elementary."
