פרנק, בלש במשטרת בוסטון, חוזר למשטרה לאחר שנפצע בעת מילוי תפקידו ואיבד את שמיעתו. בשל מצבו הבריאותי החדש ניתנת לו המשימה לתחקר את אווה, אישה חרשת שהיתה עדת ראייה לרצח אכזרי של כנופיית פשע. במהרה השניים מוצאים עצמם לכודים בבניין דירות שמותקף על ידי חברי הכנופייה בניסיון לחסלה. כששניהם מנותקים מהעולם החיצון ולא יכולים לשמוע מהיכן מגיעים המחסלים, פרנק ואווה נאלצים לתחמן את דרכם אל מחוץ לבניין ואל מקום מקלט.
