Dans les années 1950, Vito Genovese et Frank Costello sont deux chefs de la mafia italo-américaine de New York, dont la rivalité atteint son paroxysme en 1957 quand le premier ordonne d'assassiner le second. Cependant, Vincent Gigante ne parvient qu'à blesser Costello. Ce dernier préfère se retirer de ses activités.
